Recalibrating in Life’s Shifts: Finding Grounding and Compassion
The past couple of months have been some of the most challenging of my life. I have been navigating the loss of a loved one, experienced shifts in my support system, and the resulting ripple effect in my sense of self.
In this season of change, I have faced unsettling, anxiety-provoking questions about identity, belonging, and where I fit in, not just personally, but in the wider world, shaped by differences in beliefs, values, and perspectives. It has felt like standing at the edge of a great divide.
These experiences led me to ask myself:
What is life?
What does it mean to be alive?
Am I truly living, or merely getting through it?
To be honest, I had been getting through life. Even with clear boundaries and the ability to advocate for myself, I still tried to fit into roles and expectations placed on me. People-pleasing, at its finest.
There were moments when I feared I might lose myself entirely, unmoored and ungrounded. It has taken time to recalibrate, to remind myself that this is a season. One I cannot control, but one I can navigate with intention. Some days were harsh, while others were gentle, filled with small acts of compassion for myself and for others.
I had to return to basics in order to return to myself.
I asked myself:
What brings me joy?
What nourishes my soul without it involving others?
I began practicing devoted self-care, a concept learnt on YouTube, devotion instead of discipline. Softer, nurturing and flexible concept.
Not just the surface-level routines, but intentional acts of caring for myself and noticing my needs. Responding to those needs.
Mindful photography became a key part of this process, as it always is. By slowing down and observing the world through my phone lens, I could anchor myself in the present and uncover what was beneath the surface.
I asked myself:
Why this image?
What does it symbolise?
Creating quiet moments throughout my day offered space to listen deeply to myself, instead of prioritising the opinions or expectations of others.
Through my practice, I discovered a path to understanding life… my life. Life is not perfect, no one’s is but isn’t it incredible to know there is only one of you that exists. There is power in allowing life to unfold whilst setting intentions to guide your day.
If you are navigating life’s shifts, overwhelm, or feelings of disconnection, you are not alone.
You do not have to do it alone.
